Cuisine, music and cultural festivals are typically the first things to spring to mind when discussing the benefits of diversity. Often overlooked are movement cultures—sports, physical games, dance forms, exercise systems and martial arts bestowed by more than 200 ethnocultural communities in Toronto. This lecture will examine this richness of physical culture and ask why some forms, like capoeira, become part of daily life while others, such as hurling, disappear. At the same time, challenging questions will be explored about sport and recreation policy.
